Volunteer with us!
Are you a STEM professional looking to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers? We are still looking for volunteers to help us at The Big Bang Fair 2020. This takes place at the NEC in Birmingham from 11-14 March 2020.
We need 100 volunteers everyday of The Fair and are calling volunteers from a diverse range of backgrounds. We know that greater diversity will lead to more young people being inspired to consider careers in science and engineering.
Women are underrepresented in engineering, making up only 12% of the workforce, and at A level only 29% of girls’ take STEM subjects. Black, Asian and minority ethnic people (BAME) are also underrepresented in the engineering sector.
"We would love to see greater representation of volunteers from different backgrounds whether that be gender, sexual orientation, race and physical abilities because we want every young person from all backgrounds to see that STEM can offer a varied, stimulating and rewarding career."
We are still welcoming applications for all volunteering roles, especially for the following:
- Careers Captain to help run the activities in the Careers Cabin and assist visitors with the Big Bang Challenge, helping young visitors gain a greater understanding of STEM careers. We are currently looking for more volunteers for the 13/01/2020. We welcome people from all backgrounds, with a large focus on inspiring young females to become scientists.
- STEM Panellist to act as role models and participate in our 20-minute STEM career talks in the Careers Cabin. We are currently looking for all days, but particularly 11/03/2020. We welcome people from all backgrounds and panellists will be on a rotation the day to ensure a diverse line-up of scientists, engineers, technicians and apprentices, for each show.
- Robotics Challenge Judge to evaluate and reward Tomorrow’s Engineers EEP Robotics Challenge UK finalists on 13 March 2020. We are currently looking for more volunteers for all days. We welcome people from all backgrounds, with a large focus on inspiring young females.
- Robotics Challenge Events Volunteer to support the smooth running of Robotics Challenge activities. We are currently looking for more volunteers for all days. We welcome people from all backgrounds, with a large focus on inspiring young females.
‘Over 95% of our volunteers would recommend volunteering with us to a friend or colleague.’
Ken Mollison, Tomorrow’s Engineers EEP Robotics Challenge volunteer, said: "I attended thinking I would promote engineering and technology and inspire others. In fact, the reverse happened. I came away inspired by the creativity and technical ability of our young people. This I found truly inspiring."
